Figure 6 outlines the three components within the concept of operations: roadside system traffic sensor, automated work zone information system-traffic management, and roadway system traveler information. In the first component, roadside system traffic sensor, the sensor detects the traffic queue and transmits the data to the system server. In the second component, automated work zone information system-traffic management, the server evaluates the sensor data to assess the severity and location of the backup and sends e-mails and pages to appropriate AHTD staff based on the traffic condition. For the roadway system traveler information component, the appropriate message regarding traffic is communicated via HAR and the DMS displays appropriate messages to motorists.
