9 Synthesis
9.7.2 Lessons Learned
- Equipment is not 100% accurate;
- Dont underestimate the importance of system integration;
- Inductive loops and piezo sensors are only effective in good pavement;
- Lightning is a problem on high mountain passes;
- Power and phone hookups can be costly in remote locations;
- Regularly monitor weigh-in-motion systems to be sure they are calibrated;
- Personalize messages where possible;
- Local maintenance personnel should be familiarized with the system;
- Include new pavement sensors costs in any future overlay or pavement upgrade project;
- Check the service record of potential suppliers;
- Use preventative maintenance and perform a once a year bulb change out for variable message signs instead of changing out several at a time;
- Get as long a warranty as possible on the system;
- Upkeep of the system is of utmost importance;
- Systems should be out of the research/test and evaluation stage before widespread deployment occurs; and,
- Develop a Memorandum of Understanding during the planning stages for all agencies involved.
