9.7 Obstacles and Lessons Learned
Respondents were provided with an opportunity to share obstacles encountered and lessons learned in planning and deploying their technology treatments. By sharing this knowledge, respondents will help future deployers of similar technologies to avoid mistakes and to get their systems up and running more efficiently and effectively. Obstacles encountered and lessons learned included:

- Utility costs;
- Lack of power and communications in rural area;
- Continued timely maintenance of installations;
- Theft of equipment;
- Voltage drops in long wires between cabinets and signs;
- Newness of technology requiring frequent changes to system;
- Funding;
- Mother nature;
- Manufacturers not backing equipment provided;
- Resistance to trying something new and different;
- Rapidly changing technology; and,
- Problems with interagency cooperation and coordination.
