9 Synthesis
The following subsections provide summaries of the systems and analyses described above. These summaries will help the reader to understand the overall picture of rural ITS technologies that have been deployed to improve safety in rural areas.
9.1 Reason for Deployment
Common reasons for deploying technology treatments to improve rural safety included:
- High crash frequency locations;
- Long steep downgrades (truck runaway incidents);
- One or more severe crashes at a location;
- Visibility problems;
- Localized recurring severe weather conditions; and
- To allow the speed limit to reflect the weather and road conditions.
Most respondents noted that before technology treatments were implemented, conventional treatments had been tried and did not adequately reduce the problem.
