4.3.1 Road Closure / Delay Notification System – Nevada
Impetus for the Activity
A combination of capacity issues, high volume of truck traffic, and frequent road closures of mountain passes in inclement weather sparked Nevada DOT to consider a technological treatment.
Heavy truck traffic on the interstate has few options to pull over and park when the passes become closed during inclement weather. More advance warning will allow them the option of pulling into designated areas earlier along the route or choosing an alternate route.
Keeping vehicles off of rural roadways experiencing inclement weather should have a positive safety impact.
Criteria for System Selection (Hardware and Software)
Nevada is currently in the selection process. The primary consideration in system selection is system functionality and compatibility with other new systems to be installed on either end. Nevada DOT wants to ensure that all of the systems can be integrated at a future date.
Description of the System
The objective of this planned system is to provide information to travelers on road closures and delays. The system is planned for deployment on interstates across the State. A small portion of the coverage area will be urban, but the majority is in the rural environment.
