Figure 3 outlines the 4 components within the concept of operations: roadside sensor system, RTTCS server, and information through 2 components: roadway traveler information and personal information access traveler. In the first component, roadside sensor system, the sensor detects a traffic queue, and the traffic queue data is sent to the RTTCS server. For the second component, RTTCS server, the server calculates volume and traffic speed and notifies IDOT staff based on the level of traffic congestion. For the first information component, roadway traveler information, the DMS displays the appropriate message to motorists. For the personal information access traveler component, the congestion graphic on the IDOT website is updated to reflect traffic flow.
