Decision-Making Resources for ITS Deployment
PDF Version 675KB
Decision makers need information to apply ITS technologies with maximum effectiveness. Since the mid-1990s, the U.S. Department of Transportation has been accumulating information on the level of ITS deployment in the United States, and on the associated benefits, costs, and lessons learned from the experiences of those who have already deployed ITS technologies. Now, you can easily access all of this information in a single location. Simply go to www.its.dot.gov and follow the Technology Overview link.
Information on Costs, Benefits, and Lessons Learned is Easily Accessible
Much of this information has been available on the USDOT's ITS web site for some time, but it has now been consolidated into one portal through which you can easily access resource to aid you in planning and deploying ITS. For each ITS application area, you will find links to valuable decision-making resources, including:
- The Benefits Database. This searchable database provides summaries of the other agencies' experiences in deploying various ITS technologies, focusing on the benefits.
- The Costs Database. This searchable database is similar to the Benefits Database, but focuses on the costs incurred in deploying various ITS technologies.
- The Deployment Statistics Database. This database provides information on where different types of ITS technologies have been deployed throughout the U.S.
- Currently, the ITS Joint Program Office is developing a fourth tool - a Lessons Learned Database - designed to capture the experiences of stakeholders in their planning, deployment, operations, maintenance, and evaluation of ITS.
To get started exploring the resources available, simply go to www.its.dot.gov and follow the Application Overview link.
We Need Your Help!
We need your help building the new Lessons Learned Database. If you have learned valuable lessons from your experience deploying an ITS technology and would like to share your successes, your challenges, and your ideas about what you would do differently, please go to www.itslessons.its.dot.gov and tell us about it. Here, you can upload documents directly, or write and submit lessons learned in your own words. A few areas where your experiences can help others include:
- Management & Operations
